9106 Premium Free Flow Hardside Waterbed Mattress Bladder — Original Series
What is a Hardside Waterbed? A hardside waterbed uses a rigid wooden frame that the water bladder sits inside directly. It has the classic, traditional waterbed look and feel. Unlike a softside waterbed — which fits inside any standard bed frame — a hardside requires a dedicated waterbed frame.
This listing is for the bladder only. Hardside cover systems are available separately and can enhance comfort and protect your bladder — but they are not required for use with a hardside waterbed frame.
9106 Specs
- Series: Original Series
- Wave Level: Free flow — zero wave reduction, maximum motion; the most traditional waterbed experience available. There is nothing inside this bladder to dampen wave action.
- Construction: 20 mil blue PVC exterior; single-chamber design with no dampening layers
- Made in the USA by Sterling Sleep Systems since 1987
- Best For: Sleepers who love the full, unrestricted rolling motion of a classic waterbed and want a domestically manufactured product built to last
Why choose the 9106 over imported alternatives?
Unlike imported free flow bladders such as the R5050, the 9106 is manufactured in the USA to higher quality standards — giving you greater durability and peace of mind.

Hardside vs. Softside — What’s the Difference?
- Hardside (this product): Bladder sits inside a dedicated wooden waterbed frame, traditional look, classic wave feel
- Softside: Foam-encased, fits any standard bed frame, looks like a regular mattress, easier to move
*Hardside frame, heater, fill & drain kit, and conditioner sold separately.

mattress.
So much help. I could not have succeeded with out your comforting support. The assembly went fast and perfect. Great purchase and support.
Worth the price
My last free-flow mattress from another company was much cheaper, and it had a pinhole leak after the first night I used it. After many issues with it, I bought the Sterling and it's worked perfectly ever since. It's more expensive, but it's very much a case of you get what you pay for, and I'd buy it again any day. A waterbed mattress isn't the place to cut corners unless you enjoy a midnight swim.
EXCELLENT!
First, I want to say THANK YOU! You really went the extra mile for me in a difficult situation! Shipping and packaging were fabulous! I waited to write this review after I had slept on the mattress for awhile. I absolutely and completely satisfied. It is completely what it was supposed to be. I’m excited to basically have a brand new bed, since the frame was purchased in 1978! The liner (especially) and the mattress were easy to set up and fill. Thank you again.
9106 Premium Free Flow Hardside Waterbed Mattress
I am so thankful for Sterling Sleep Systems This free flow waterbed mattress is made like waterbeds from 50 years ago. The rubberized material is more comfortable than the new vinyl material beds and much stronger. The squared corners enable you to use every square inch of the waterbed and permit you to make the bed so it looks good and holds the sheets and blankets in place instead of the new vinyl beds that have rounded corners. Also Sterling's 9106 water bed is deeper than the new vinyl beds so you do not hit the bottom when you sleep on your side or weigh more than 100 pounds. I was willing to pay more than I did to have a water bed made like my original bed from 50 years ago and to my surprise it was less expensive than the new vinyl water bed that I purchased which, did I mention was not the size the company claimed and did not last a year. The customer service from Sterling was courteous and professional which was also like the customer service you got from companies more than 50 years ago. Needless to say I am very satisfied and give them a 10 star rating.
