King for a day: California King vs Eastern King
King for a Day: California King vs. Eastern King
I hear this all the time: "I need a king-size mattress."
To which I always have to respond: "Okay, what state are you calling from?"
Why? Because depending on where you are in the U.S., we can usually make an educated guess about which king you're referring to.
Now, you might be thinking: "Wait... isn't there just one king-size bed?" Short answer—nope!
There are two main types of king mattresses that we (and our competitors) offer, plus a few specialty variations you might find in hotels or on cruise ships. But for now, let's focus on the big two: California King and Eastern King (also called Standard King).
California King: The Long and Lean Monarch
Since we’re based in California, let’s start with the California King—because, well… why not?
A California King measures 72 inches wide by 84 inches long. That means it's longer than a Standard King but a bit narrower. If you're tall and tired of your feet hanging off the end of the bed, the Cal King might be your perfect match.
Eastern King (aka Standard King): The Wide and Regal Choice
The Eastern King, also known as the Standard King, measures 76 inches wide by 80 inches long. It’s four inches wider than a California King but four inches shorter in length. If you’re more concerned about sprawling out rather than legroom, the Eastern King gives you extra space to stretch sideways.
The "Nominal Size" Secret
Now, before you go measuring your existing bedframe with a ruler, here’s something to keep in mind: much like lumber, mattress sizes are nominal. That means a mattress labeled 72” x 84” might actually measure closer to 71” x 83”. Why? A couple of reasons:
- Manufacturing & Cover Fit – We, like other manufacturers, design our covers to fit snugly. During the production process, the final size can vary slightly, usually within ½ to 1 inch.
- Frame Fit – Most bed frames are built slightly larger than the mattress dimensions to accommodate different brands. If a mattress were a perfect 72” x 84”, it might be too tight a squeeze for your frame—and you already struggle enough putting on fitted sheets, right?
Which King is Right for You?
If you're debating between a California King and an Eastern King, ask yourself:
- Do you need extra legroom? → Go for a California King.
- Do you want the widest possible sleeping space? → The Eastern King is your best bet.
Whichever king you choose, just remember: You deserve to sleep like royalty!
Sweet dreams, your highness!
